I know you've said the book is full of factual errors, but RGK—The Art of Roy Krenkel claims on page 109, with a full page image, that the cover is by Krenkel. It does show some of RGK's characteristics, though a bit of FF's. Maybe a little rescue effort by FF? Does the edition give a credit to Frazetta?
I just reread your text and realize you're not saying Frazetta DID the cover, it was just WiTH him. Sorry, I guess my previous comment is moot. But Frazetta's help must've been minor?
Thank you for sharing.
Keep up the good work.
Thomas,
I forgot about the repro of The Wizard of Oz cover in the Vanguard book on RGK! I have no idea why there was no mention that Frazetta had assisted on this great painting, but it doesn't surprise me as this book is fraught with inaccurate data! The knowledge that Frazetta had worked with Roy on this painting was known shortly after the time of it's printing and it's documented in all the bibliography's of Frazetta's art! Frazetta knew how to punch up paintings by Krenkel and this is a great example!
Great post !
I really like these b/w illustrations : the fact that they were obviously quickly done gives them a lot of energy.
These illustations are just so full of life and movement.
I always thought the lion's face on the cover was the most Frazetta-ish thing about it. I've always loved these illos, thanks for posting them.
Great stuff! I got to the picture of the Scarecrow and Lion and said to myself whoa- who did this? and then backed up...Thank you for sharing!
