These are such a delight. I bought these as a boy, and still treasure the original paperbacks. I loved the Frazetta's, too... but it was the Krenkel's that really evoked that sense of wonder in me. These still make my heart sing as they did when I was young. Frazetta put you into the action: Krenkel put you into the world.
Simply gorgeous.
I hope to always have these near, to take me to another time, another place.

My father had most or all of these editions in his library (and I suspect that he still does). As a boy, I marveled at the worlds shown by Krenkel.

Frankly, I was disappointed when I finally began to read Burroughs. Krenkel (and Frazetta) had built-up expectations that were not met by the stories themselves.

The sabertooth on the left in Back to the Stone Age has the kind of musculature Frazetta often displayed when drawing big cats. I'd be curious to hear which other of Frazetta's stylistic attributes can be seen on the covers for A Fighting Man of Mars, Mastermind of
Mars, Tarzan Triumphant and Back to the Stone Age. Am I correct in assuming that Frazetta painted the finished versions working from Krenkel's colors studies, as on Tarzan Triumphant?

What a great post. Thanks!

mdaraine, I believe the finished paintings were done by Krenkel, with an assist from Frazetta on certain areas of the paintings.

The mastodon on the right looks to have been painted mostly by Frazetta, as well as the mountains behind it. Also, the musculature on the back of the man looks to have a lot of Frazetta about it.

I have to tell you--thanks for sharing all this great art. I've started checking your site daily, usually in the morning when I'm looking for a pleasant start to the day.

I collected science fiction and fantasy illustrators pretty heavily from the mid-sixties to mid-seventies. Didn't hang onto much, but I still have a deep love for pretty much the same artists you do, so revisiting so many of them is pure joy.
