Berni Wrightson had a huge influence on me as a young artist, especially his comic splash pages in books like House of Mystery and House of Secrets. I bought the first issue of Plop! when I was a kid for that very reason. I learned so much about shadow play and fabric folds from him. I'm deeply indebted to this great artist.
PLOP! - for those few who might not know - was DC Comics' attempt to recapture the zaniness of the early issues of MAD (when it was a comic book edited by Harvey Kurtzman). Wrightson's stories for #1 and #5 are classic, and Sergio Aragones' contributions to these early issues are also hilarious. Come to think of it, Sergio's short story for HOUSE OF MYSTERY called "The Poster Plague" (scripted by Steve Skeates) provided the initial impetus for PLOP!, as its finale had the sound effect "Klop!" which editor Joe Orlando misremembered as "Plop!" (hence the name for the comic book).
